Robert, your site can be indexed many times on the 1st page or any page for that matter. All this means is that your site and one of the accompanying URLS have been indexed together. By obtaining more than one place or one URL on the 1st page, your site will obviously take up more real estate. Not only does your site take up more real estate, but it sticks out like a sore thumb. Of course we all want as much traffic as we can get, so making our site look different than all the other listings is a benefit.
I have attached an example of a site that has been double indexed on the first page of Google. The search term I used was "ibm computer repair", you can search for this yourself or look at the image I have attached. Where I have indicated on the image you will see a listing for :

This site is not only listed above the fold, but is listed twice compared to the other sites on the 1st page. Hopefully I have answered your question here.
