Are free directory listings good for search engine results? I know if someone were to go on the directory and find me there that would be great but i'm guessing very unlikely. I am worried because they are free they might not be worth anything. If anyone can help that would be great!

Free directories are a fantastic way to build links to your website. As I continue to study search engine optimization, I am finding more and more that directories are absolutely an excellent way to build a nice link base. We only utilize free directories and we will not pay to be listed or give a reciprocal link back to a site just because they listed us in their directory.
Some of the free directories that we used to start off our SEO campaigns that have paid off in great dividends, are the local listings with the major search engines. In order to locate these simply go to Google and search for "Google Local Listings", "Yahoo Local Listings" or "MSN Local Listings" and you will be brought to the sign up page for each.
In our campaigns we were able to bring many searchers through these directories or listings.
I don't know if you all have seen local.com, but most recently we opened an account there and they are running a "Best Of" contest for 2009. Of course they have "paid" services that they offer, but I think that the best of contest would be a pretty nice addition to any company's award portfolio. Did not seem to be too many competitors in our field enrolled so perhaps the same would apply to your business. It's worth checking out.
