Black Hat SEO - 3 Tactics Exposed

Written by: Grayson Thrush

There are a number of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques that can increase your search rank. While most are generally considered ethical and fine
to use, there are a number of tactics that fall under the moniker “Black Hat SEO.” These include methods employed solely in an attempt to cut corners and trick search engines into increasing your page rank (PR).

These techniques are widely considered unethical, and should not be used. If for no other reason, keep in mind that if you do use such practices you may get caught and therefore banned from the major search engine indexes. Nevertheless, some unscrupulous SEO analysts do attempt to game the system.

Keyword stuffing is an extremely popular Black Hat SEO tactic. This involves placing keywords on a website with such frequency so as to make to overall content nonsensical and cumbersome. Some analysts will even utilize hidden and random placement of keywords in order to artificially increase keyword
density.

Link bombing, sometimes called link washing, is an attempt to increase your search ranking by having a large number of sites link to a page with identical anchor text. For example, link bombing often occurs in blogs, where a site owner replies to multiple blog postings linking to their website.

A doorway page is low in actual content, and is instead stuffed with repeating keywords and phrases designed to increase the search rank of the page. Doorway pages contain little or no content. They are instead optimized for a number of terms that aren’t connected to the site’s primary content.

There are many Black Hat SEO methods for increasing search rank, and these are but a few. These and other such techniques should be avoided as a point of pride and honor. Moreover, they should not be used because in the long run they are not likely to be successful. Search engines such as Google are becoming increasingly sophisticated when it comes to detecting Black Hat SEO tactics.  Make sure you speak with your SEO company to ensure they are not using these tactics to protect the future or your company's domain!

Why You Should I Hire an SEO Firm

Hiring an SEO firm is something many business owners are contemplating these days. Since the widespread popularity of search engine optimization (SEO) and its benefits, there have been many marketing firms offering to run SEO campaigns for other businesses. There have also been some do-it-yourself business owners who feel they can optimize their own website as well. From an overall marketing standpoint, the case can be made that investing in online advertisement will potentially reach more prospective customers through SEO than other forms of advertising such as print ads. Whether you are contemplating optimization on your website or thinking about running your own SEO campaign, here are a few reasons why you should hire an SEO firm to help land you in front of more potential customers looking for your product or services.

1. They have the Expertise
Even though the stereotypical web developer/SEO professional is thought to play video games all day and work at night in his mother's basement, they should still be respected as a professional. After all, do you know how to make changes to the cascading style sheet or create a dynamic sitemap? A main reason you hire a Denver SEO Firm is for the same reason you hire an attorney to write up your legal documents or represent you in court; they are the expert! I personally do not change the brakes on my car or put a crown on my own tooth. Granted, I could learn how to do it on my own but I know it will save me in the long run to hire someone who specializes in these services. Now don't get me wrong, there are a few companies out there claiming they know SEO and how to get you on the first page of Google so they can get a piece of the pie but choosing a good SEO firm comes later...

2. An SEO Firm will save you time
When you hire a Denver SEO firm to handle your online marketing and SEO, it will save you loads and loads of time! I cannot stress enough how much time goes into a worthwhile SEO campaign. SEO firms have years of experience under their belt (hopefully) and a full knowledgeable team to work on optimizing and marketing your website for you.

Like anything, there is a learning curve to search engine optimization. I would be ignorant to say it has the steepest learning curve of any profession but I honestly believe it is in the top 25%. The time an SEO professional has but into gaining all of the knowledge they have gained is shocking! The lucky thing for someone who hires an SEO firm is they have already previously put in the time learning which ensures the website will rise in the search engines much quicker than someone who tries to optimize themselves. There is also a pretty good chance the Denver SEO Firm will be able to utilize the connections they have with other professionals to help speed the campaign along.

Not only will the SEO firm you hire know the latest tricks to optimization, they also know what doesn't work. As an SEO professional, we have learned through trial and error what effort to consume our time with.

3. It's all in the numbers
Can you imagine paying employees that you cannot track the work or hours they put into their job? You would not be able to justify if paying them has been profitable for you or your company. The same holds true for hiring a Denver SEO Firm. All of the good SEO firms have a tracking system on the website they are optimizing. In this tracking system you will be able to see daily visitors, what keywords they are typing in to find your website, what search engine or source they came to your website from, how long the individual was on your site, where the location of your visitors are coming from and the list goes on and on. SEO firms also have access to very useful web based tools such as a keyword tool that will tell you the monthly volume of searchers typing in certain keywords or keyword phrases. This is extremely beneficial to recognize and understand what keywords should be targeted in your SEO campaign.

If a business owner runs their own seo campaign are they going to create monthly reports to keep track of progress? Is a business owner going to focus on key point indicators such as bounce rate and new visitors in their SEO campaign to ensure prime results?

4. You Get to Focus on your own Business
Probably the greatest part about hiring a Denver SEO firm to help with your online marketing is you get to concentrate on your own business; what you are good at! I have previously stated how much time goes into an SEO campaign and the truth is for the first six months you need to be constantly working on building links, writing articles and creating PR for your website every day. You have to admit, if you had to just concentrate on running your business and manage your staff efficiently while the leads came in you would be sitting pretty happy. There is no reason for a business to be concerned with trying to manage their online marketing and the day to day activities as well; that is hard enough.

Rely on a professional with years of experience and the time and team to fully optimize your website. Although the thought of not spending money on something you think you could do yourself is nice, hiring an SEO firm for your Denver internet marketing will pay for itself and then some in just 4-6 months!

Do You Really Need A Website Designer?

By: Cade Lee

Most of the sites we have worked on that have been built by “website designers” are not effectively producing leads for that business. We have seen some of the most beautiful websites but without traffic and without new customers what good are they? Your online business should be another source of income and customers. If you trust the right people to work with your website designer than you might have a shot of obtaining both.

Please do not misunderstand what I am saying here. Website designers are very useful if their services are used in the correct capacity. Most web designers do not have a clue how to build a website that is developed to convert traffic or drive floods of traffic to the site; most developers that I have talked with would agree. Usually web designers are focused on aesthetics, navigation, look and feel and not placement in the search engines.

So why do you have a website?

Most business owners that I speak with have a website so that they can develop more online business. When I say this, what I mean is they are looking for more prospects or customers online. They definitely want to see some type of return from their website as most of them have spent a small fortune on developing the site to begin with. So if that is the case for you, it is probably best to make certain that the web designer you are working with owns a successful online business and knows also how to run it. They should be able to show you some successful online campaigns that they have led and give you references for their work. Simply showing you websites that they have built is not enough. I know that you want a “pretty” site
but I am certain it is more important that you are able to develop new customers from your site, right? It only stands to reason that your website designer should have the same experience that would deliver the results you are looking to achieve yourself!

Your website is your business online!

Sure it is nice to have a charming storefront, one that customers constantly compliment. Does it bring in cash flow? Is your office, store, garage or retail space built for sales?

These are the same types of questions that you should be asking yourself about your website. Your website is not there to win awards or compliments, you are building this website to make money and build customer relationships. Even if you have the lowest prices online and are providing more services than your nearest competitor, it is the website that attracts more traffic that wins more prospects and customers. Being the best at marketing your product and services is really all that matters at the end of the day. Stop reading this right now, hop on Google and check it out. Use a search term that a customer would use to find your business. If you don’t know what they would type in, go to Google’s free adwords keyword tool and locate a search term related to your business or service. (To locate Google’s free keyword tool simply search for “adwords keyword tool” in Google)

Now, after you have located a popular search term for your business, search it! Open the first “organic” result that you see (by organic, I do not mean any of the “sponsored links” or local listings next to the map), what do you think of your competition’s website? Is it the prettiest site you have seen? Is it the “coolest” site you have ever been too? If I was to place a wager on it, my guess is that it is none of the above. Probably a very average looking site at best, yet all of your prospective customers are coming here first.

Marketing online is not like you’re off-line marketing

On every website project I have ever been a part of it seems that somebody always has a problem with a font that we have chosen or an image that we had used. While branding is extremely important and the look and feel of your website is important as well, it is important to remember that all of the communication tools and techniques that you use in the real world are very different than what works online. Whatever type of marketing you are doing in the real world may be a complete and utter failure online. This is why it is so critical to work with an online marketing agency or consultant who has experience with successful websites. When I state successful, I mean websites that have a proven track record of traffic and generating leads. Usually these types of individuals know what works best for traffic conversion and online marketing. For example, online marketing absolutely requires you to know how to get your site ranked extremely high in search engines like Google and Yahoo so that you organically show up on the first page for customers that are searching for your product or services.

Most website designers and businesses do not know SEO or search engine optimization. If a business owner does know and understand how to optimize their own website; they usually do not have the time to implement all of the tactics and techniques used by a search engine optimization professional to make the campaign successful. It is imperative for any online business to have both an optimized presence as well as a strong marketing campaign online! This means that not only should the site be optimized for search engine optimization but there must be a campaign put in place for search engine marketing.

If you are looking to market online, only work with Internet marketing firms that know website and online marketing

I know it’s a simple statement but probably 97% of web design companies do not know how to create websites that actually market your products and services. Often times when we are talking with prospective customers about search engine optimization they refer to their experience with the larger corporations that have handled their pay per click campaigns and even their “search engine optimization campaigns”. You absolutely must work with people that know how to create “high traffic” websites that can “convert”. A sales representative from one of the larger advertising directories doesn’t usually have knowledge of SEO. Usually he/she can regurgitate whatever pitch their sales manager gave them that morning and sure it sounds good, but will the team behind him/her be able to deliver the product that you were promised? Usually they cannot deliver the results that were originally promised or they are able to show minimal results compared to a firm or company that is dedicated to internet marketing. Internet marketing takes a great deal of time and cannot happen overnight. You’ll need to work with a team that can make it possible for you to have an online revenue stream. These people must have real world experience as well as online experience that can combine your website into a practical functioning marketing machine for your business! The best combination would be a search engine optimization professional that has sales and marketing experience or a marketing company that has proven search engine optimization experience.

If you are attempting to perform search engine optimization or search engine marketing without a professional, that would be very similar to representing yourself in court if you are not a lawyer or building your own house if you are not a general contractor. Granted, I’m certain that you could learn any one of these trades but it is probably best if you focused on the strengths you have in your business rather than trying to focus all of your time and energy on staying up to date with Internet marketing. The most successful businesses and business leaders have developed a team of experts and surrounded themselves with experience.

Lastly, MEASURE THE RESULTS!

It doesn’t matter whether or not you are advertising in the Yellow Pages, newspapers, local trade magazines, or a bulletin board near your office! You will always, always want to measure the success of any marketing campaign to validate its effect on business. It is never a surprise for us to see a prospective client that has absolutely no idea about the amount of traffic they get on a daily, monthly, or yearly basis. Usually they do not know where they get the traffic from, how long visitors are on their website, or what keywords brought them to their site to begin with. You should always pay attention to your key performance indicators for your online strategy and if your web developer has not shown you how to monitor the results of your website, you might want to consider working with a different developer.

At the end of the day, a website developer is absolutely needed to help you with your website; however, they are usually best at working with code, graphics and overall look and feel. An internet marketing professional is what will help you take your online business to the next level. Either a professional Denver Internetm Marketing firm or agency will help you establish a marketing plan for your site so that you can start to see results from your presence online.

What is PageRank

Written by: Nick Hantge

PageRank (PR) is Google’s method for ranking all web pages they index on their search engine.   Google compares all web pages by the page rank they assign them.  Therefore, A web page with a higher PageRank is considered more important and is more likely to be listed above a page with a lower PageRank.

“Google describes PageRank: PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value.”

In essence, think of the links passed from site A to site B  can be thought of as a vote, by page A, for page B.  Google looks at more than the total number of votes, or links a page receives however; they also analyzes the page that casts the vote.  If a vote is casted by a site with a high PR it will pass on it’s importance helping increase the PageRank of the voted site.  A page can get more than one vote from another page as well.  It is important to Google that the two pages are relevant although the a high PR can still be effective when linking to other sites for SEO.

The SEO War; using Guerilla Tactics
Sunday, 31 May 2009 22:59

By Cade Lee

Search Engine Optimization is much more than just optimizing for the first page of Google. If you have read through our previous posts than you already understand this concept. As a matter of fact when I go to review my monthly analytics a good 26% to 30% of my traffic comes from other sources than the search engines. Granted a good 54.44% of the traffic we obtain comes from search engines but I definitely would not want to give up 26%! In order to get the referral traffic we are exposed through various social networks online as well as several different social bookmarking sites. The whole goal of Guerrilla SEO or Guerilla search engine marketing is to bring traffic to your site without blaring a direct commercial for your services or product.

A good example of Guerilla SEO tactics would be marketing through article marketing to the major article repositories like Ezine Articles. By obtaining an “Expert Author” status you are allowing Ezine Articles to publish your content which in turn allows other users to use your content as long as they post the article “as is” with the links in the resources box. Those links of course (you are usually allowed to links within the resource box) are directed to your website or URL. By establishing yourself as an Expert Author you are accomplishing two things. First you are establishing yourself as a credible source for your service or product and secondly you are not directly selling your services. In this “shared planet” paradigm it is almost forbidden to come right out and ask for business. So by giving you information away without any expectation of reciprocity you are showing your dedication to your profession and opinion on the matter that you are writing about. A good example of this would be an article that I most recently published on SEO vs. PPC vs. Social Networking. This article has generated a fair amount of hits already (100 views in the last 60 days). I know that is not groundbreaking; however, if I have 20 of these articles generating the same amount of interest as this article than the math is pretty easy, I would be looking at 2,000 views on my articles every month! The conversion of that traffic is at about 2% meaning that I am getting almost 2% of the viewers of this article clicking through to my site, so that is an additional 40 visitors that I am obtaining. If you search for “SEO vs. PPC vs. Social Networking” you will see that my article is at the top of the rankings for this search term. There are not enough searches for this search term to obtain any kind of data from Google, at the same time obtaining that number one page rank for the search term took little or no effort at all. This is a small added bonus for the article; most of the traffic definitely comes through the article repositories.

Optimizing Your Website for Search Engines and People
Wednesday, 20 May 2009 09:54

Written by: Nick Hantge

seoYou want people to find, choose and use your website, not your competitors’ websites. This means that you need to appear high up the rankings on the search engine results pages – ideally in the top half of page one. But how do you do that?

Search engines aim to respond to their users’ queries by producing a list of websites that are relevant to the keywords that the user has entered into the search engine query box (e.g. Google toolbar) and high-quality.

Your website will be highly-ranked if search engines judge it to be a high-quality site that is relevant to queries for your type of product or service. If they cannot work out what your website is about or they judge it to be poor quality then it will appear low down in the rankings.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is simply doing the things that search engines, especially Google, look for so that they rank you higher on their results pages. Part One of this article explains how search engines and keywords work. This part describes some practical things that you can do to improve your search engine rankings.

Website Content

The content of your website should be very clear so that search engines – and people – can work out what it is about. The quality of the spelling, copywriting and structure will be judged by search engines too.

Keyword rich

The most effective places to use your keywords are:

  • page titles
  • headings and sub-headings
  • bold text
  • the anchor text of the links within your website
  • the first 25 words of your html document (which often includes navigation items as well as some of the text that appears on the page)
  • your home page.
  • Longer search terms with 3-5 words (known as long-tail searches) are increasingly used by people when they are looking for a website. So try to:
  • use all the keywords in common searches for your type of product – e.g. if someone is searching for “Gordon Brown” then a website with “Gordon” and “Brown” will beat a website with just “Brown”
  • closely associate the keywords in common searches – e.g. if someone is searching for a website selling “English goats cheese” then websites using all three keywords together will beat websites using those words in separate places.

Not keyword stuffed

Keyword stuffing is a meaningless list of words that are put on a webpage to trick search engines into ranking a website more highly than it really deserves. Nowadays, search engines are programmed to detect these lists and penalise sites that use them. People also hate keyword stuffing. It almost guarantees that visitors will leave your website quickly and never return.
